Madison School Board Approves A Tax Increase

Madison County property owners can expect to pay more in taxes.

Last night the Madison County School Board voted to increase real estate and personal property tax that is paid to them by 2.8 percent. The new rate will be 61.8 cents per $100 of assessed value.

School Superintendent Elmer Thomas told board members the increase is needed because of additional cost to the school system including $220,000 increase in insurance and to offset the state mandated 2 percent pay increase for teachers. That raise leaves the school system owing $220,000 not funded by the state.

The tax increase will give the school system an additional $1.55 million. The increase will mean Madison County property owners will pay an extra $34 on a house valued at $200,000. The only board member to vote against the increase was Mary Renfro.
