Grand Jury To Hear Case Against Powell County Minister

A Powell County minister charged with sexually abusing two minors from his church faced a judge again Tuesday morning.

After a preliminary hearing for Steve williams in Wolfe County, a judge decided to turn the case over to the grand jury.

Williams, 52, was arrested on Friday, December 18 after one of his alleged victims told their school counselor about the abuse.

Williams’ attorney and long-time friend requested the former minister’s bond be reduced. ABC 36 was told the judge decided to not change Williams’ bond and keep it at $300,000.

Investigators say Williams came into contact with the victims through the church where he was a minister.

The Powell County Sheriff says he’s concerned that there could be other victims.

“I’ve been told there’s over a hundred kids that attend this church, said Chief Deputy Robert Mathews”.

“I don’t know how many kids attended the church he was a Pastor of in Prestonburg. We’re still investigating this case . I don’t have any other victims at this time, but there could be other victims that haven’t come forward yet,” he added.

In addition to being a minister, Williams was a subsitute bus driver for the Powell County School District.

Since the allegations, the Sheriff says, Williams resigned from his position at the church. The transportation director has also told ABC 36, Williams will no longer be called to substitute on school bus routes.

A grand jury will hear the case on January 13th.
