Boy Scout Killed During Weekend Camping Trip

A weekend camping trip for Boy Scouts Troop 30 turned to tragedy Saturday night when a dead tree fell on a tent killing Jack Rose, 11, instantly.

It was maybe an 18 inch diameter tree, and it was just rotten at the base and unfortunately it fell and went through the tent,” John May of the Wolfe County Search and Rescue said. “I mean you hear them fall all the time when we’re out doing rescues. It’s not that uncommon for trees to be falling so you just need to be mindful when you’re around one of those trees, you never know what condition a tree could be in.”

The troop from Louisville was camping in the Chimney Top Creek area of Red River Gorge.

Two physicians were camping nearby and along with members of the Wolfe County Search and Rescue attempted CPR.
