The suspect in an officer-involved shooting is out of the hospital and in jail.

According to court documents, 26-year-old Sergei Sargaev was arrested at the University of Kentucky hospital, where he was taken after being shot by a Lexington police officer.

In a press conference on Wednesday, Lexington Police Chief Mark Barnard said an officer noticed a suspicious vehicle parked in the back lot of the La Quinta Inn on Stanton Way at around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Barnard says they received calls about narcotic activity going on in the area.

According to Sargaev’s arrest citation, the officer approached the car Sargaev was in and told him several times to roll down his window or open the door and not to start his vehicle.

Documents say Sargaev started his car and slammed into the officer’s patrol car.

Documents go on to say that Sargaev put the officer’s life at risk.

Police say the officers fired his gun, hitting Sargaev.

The officer is on administrative leave per department policy.

Kentucky State Police are investigating.

Sargaev is charged with wanton endangerment of a police officer and criminal mischief.

Sargaev is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
