3 Hikers Seriously Injured

Three hikers sustained serious injuries after falling from a 50 foot cliff at Red River Gorge this weekend.

“There was some brush and trees on the edge of the cliff so it’s possible they were unable to see what was on the other side of it and since it had been raining on and off all day everything was pretty slick,” said Michael Hackett of the Wolfe County Search and Rescue.

Crews from Powell, Wolfe and Menifee Counties Search and Rescue worked together to get the hikers.

“Two of them landed on a slope and ended up rolling toward the Red River and both of their feet and part of their legs were in the river,” said Hackett. “By the time we got to them they were all hypothermic, severely injured and in pain. The third person was the most injured who lost her consciousness twice while we were there.”

Between 30 and 50 people assisted in the rescue that started late Saturday night and continued into Sunday morning.

The condition of the hikers is unknown.
