Hiker Dies In Fall
For the third time this year a person has fallen to their death at Chimney Rock in the Red River Gorge.
Sunday Rescue teams from Powell and Menifee Counties were called out after Timothy Amiot, 28, of Cincinnati. crossed the safety railing fell 200 feet to his death.
“He jumped across and apparently had rolled hi ankle when he land on the other side and it pitched him back and he fell off the right hand side of the cliff and that about a 200 foot cliff line,” said John May with Wolfe County Seach and Rescue.
Chimney Rock is a popular destination for hikers and this was the first time Amiot has visited the park.
“It’s a breathtaking view and people love going to this particular spot, unfortunately they tend to climb over the railing, and when you do that your life is certainly in danger,” said John May.
“They like to jump over to the chimney part of this, sometimes you can make it and sometimes you don’t.”
It took several hours to recover the man’s body. Officials said he died upon impact.
