Hundreds of people braved the rain Saturday to run in honor of a fallen Richmond officer.

The Second Annual Officer Daniel Ellis Memorial 5K took place Saturday on Officer Ellis’ 35th birthday.

Organizers are hoping to beat the $75,000 they raised last year for the Ellis Memorial Foundation.

Brian Herald, who was a participant in the 5K said, “This is amazing. The crowd is here on a rainy day like this to see this many people turn out and to be a part of it is great for me. The legacy that Daniel has started here and this to be the second year, this is a great turn out.”

Richmond Police Officer Jason Friend said, “Daniel’s legacy is something that perseveres in this city for a very long long time and he was an officer of inspiration and he was a friend to everyone.”

Officer Ellis died in November 2016, two days after a suspect in a robbery investigation shot him in the head.
